  One of our tactics with our children (that didn't work) was to allow the messes our children made to remain until *they* tired of them, and decided on their own to clean up. Like that was ever going to happen! They were perfectly happy to wallow in their own slop, much like a pig. We were the only ones unhappy with the situation.
